💡 CONTEXT / 1 OF 5 — The Setting
Before you can understand this verse, you need to know who Jesus was talking to. And you need to know who he was talking about.
In Jesus's time, the most respected religious teachers were a group called the Pharisees. The Pharisees were the rule experts. They had taken the laws that Moses gave the Jewish people in the Old Testament, and they had broken those laws down into smaller rules. How many smaller rules? Six hundred and thirteen of them.
Think about that for a second.
There were rules about how far you were allowed to walk on Saturday. Rules about which side of your plate to eat from first. Rules about how to wash your hands. Rules about what you could carry, where you could go, who you could talk to, what you could touch.
Regular people lived under all of these rules. Every single day. And if you broke one, even by accident, the Pharisees would let you know about it. Imagine being graded on six hundred and thirteen things at once, every hour, with no break and no day off. That was just normal life for the people listening to Jesus.
So when Jesus stands up and says "come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden," he isn't talking to people who had a long week at work. He's talking to people who were exhausted from being told they were never doing religion right. They were tired down to the bone. And not from working in the fields. From trying to be holy enough.
That is the room Jesus was speaking into.
